Just hatched – the day old chicks are here!
Megan at the Grayslake Feed Sales is awesome! She said they picked up 120 chicks from the hatchery this morning. She brings them back and makes sure they eat and drink and then she called us to pick them up. I was so excited because I’d never even held a chick, let alone a day old baby chick!
Around 4pm, my daughter and I went to get the baby chicks. They were waiting in metal tubs, sorted by breed. Megan let my daughter pick which ones she wanted. She made sure we had our brooder box, light, food and water. Then we were off to bring them home.
The chicks cheeped all the way home while my daughter held the carton (think a large DD munchkins box). The first time one poked its head out the hole she screamed, but she got used to them fast. The rest of the night all she wanted to do was play with the chicks although she was a little afraid to hold them alone. She loved when I held them with her or put them on the floor with her. Even the dogs were excited…well Popeye couldn’t get enough of their smell. Ollie was not so interested…I bet when they start flapping around she will be more excited.
They took right to the feeder
I was a little worried about their water because instead of a traditional waterer, we used a special nipple on a soda bottle. Didn’t take long for them to get the hang of it! The Brooder Bottle Cap works great.
All tucked in for the night
We had preliminary names picked out….but now that we have met them we are all set. Come back tomorrow and meet each chick!
