The weather was ideal all weekend!

Finally, no rain and the mosquitoes were not bad at all!! It was such a pleasure to spend time outside.  We built a temporary run for the chickens and my little ones cannot get enough of sitting in the run and giving the chickens treats.  I also did a ton of weeding because the garden is getting a bit out of control. In general I do not like weeding, but the mosquitoes have been so bad I couldn’t stay in there for long.  Today was not bad at all and I felt I accomplished something….just forgot to take a picture!

I took a picture of this track in the garden mud, but not the plants!!

Zombie down the ramp

Took a lot of coaxing to get Zombie down the ramp.  Everyone else decided to fly.

The saddest part of my weekend…

First, I realized I will never be a true farm girl.  I am too attached to my animals.  I feel guilty when I feed the compost worms to the chickens. I am not a vegetarian, but I won’t eat the fish out of the pond (unlike my step-son and daughter).  I know it’s silly, but I just can’t do it.

Second, the worst thing I might have to do is…..let go of some of the girls….WHO ARE NOT GIRLS!!

Mr. Soup and Mr. Maude??

I am pretty sure I need to change Maude’s name to….Mr. Maude.

Same goes for Soup, but I am in denial.  “That red comb is much pinker in the sun,” I told the hubby.

Two out of six chickens are cockerels!!

I do not want to lose both my Easter Eggers, but I already see aggression and we definitely cannot have two cockerels…aka Roosters!  I also told the hubby it just means we will have to get more chicks….good thing he didn’t burn the brooder box like he wanted to do!

Maude's red comb

Hubby wants them re-homed ASAP…don’t tell him I’m going to stall!  These are my first chickens and the comb doesn’t tell everything.  Their saddle feathers and hackle feathers are still coming in so you can’t see pointy feathers yet.  Oh and that sound from Maude…was just a really loud cackle, right?

Regardless of how the chicken situation resolves, I am very grateful for this amazing home we have made and the wonderful family that fills it.
