Introducing the Stupendous Six

The hen party has begun! The chicks are now two days old and ready to meet the world.

The Black Australorps

Black Australorps are the Australian version of Buff Orpingtons.  They are black and will have a green sheen when older.  They are supposed to be friendly and good brown egg layers.

zombie

Zombie

Name courtesy of my son…originally he wanted Zombie Death Eyeball.  Should I be worried?  Zombie is super sweet, but also had the first case of pasty butt.  He loved the tush soak, but not a big fan of wiping the dried poop off.  Must have worked because then he left us a giant lovely mess on the floor.

He has a fully black head and yellow belly.

ozzieOzzy

Australia is the land of Oz and a black chick?  Black Oz…dn’t help but think of Ozzy Osbourne. She is a sweet little thing.

She has yellow on both sides of her head and more yellow on her belly.

Ameraucanas

Sometimes they are called Easter Eggers….Why? Their eggs will be blue or green.  This breed was what the hubby wanted and I couldn’t be more pleased.  Also supposed to be friendly and so far they are quite snuggley.

Maude

This is the hubby’s chick and she fits her name.  A bit of a loner, but super sweet and the first one we saw fall asleep.

She has a cute grey splash of color on the top of her head and is a softer shade of yellow than the Buffs.

soup

Soup

At the store, she was only one of two brown Ameraucanas and we all agreed she seemed special.  She is very friendly and has the best coloring.  Originally she was going to be called Nugget, but I worried that could become worrisome since it’s my son’s favorite food.  Regardless, he refuses to call her Soup and instead calls her Pot Pie.  I think she looks like a mish mash bowl of soup.

She is a little of this and a little of that….definitely the most unique coloring of the bunch.

The Buff Orpingtons

Everyone said this breed was one of the friendliest so of course we had to have a couple.  They originally hail from the UK.  We hope they turn into “lap chickens”.

chickaletta

Chickaletta

If you have preschoolers then you have to know the Paw Patrol. For those who don’t, Chickaletta is Mayor Goodway’s chicken who is…”always in her purse”.  Well I want a purse chicken!  She is soo soft and cuddly…and mine-ish.  Only problem is she looks almost exactly like the other buff.  I tried a little non-toxic green food coloring on her wing, but now I noticed her spot that distinguishes her from her sister.

She is just what I pictured a baby chick to look like!  Buttery yellow from head to tail…except for one speck of white on the tip of her beak.

bluebella

Bluebella

Last but not least…my daughter’s pride and joy!  She is a fluffy yellow ball despite her name. Not sure of the name origin, but it’s best not to argue with a four year old on the name of things.

Fluffy yellow twin to her sister…she has a slightly thinner head, but it’s easier to just look for the beak without the white.

Day 2 of the Hen Party was a success.  Maude had a slight case of the pasty butt this morning, but everyone had a clean inspection when we came home this afternoon. I think they look bigger than yesterday…so far so good!
