The Wyandotte chicks are all grown up

Wyandottes at 23 weeks

Maybe it’s just a mother’s instinct to have a hard time letting her kids grow up….the “baby chickens” as I still call them are definitely not little chicks anymore.

After the Polar Vortex, little sick Bluebella went back out with the flock as if nothing was wrong. However, we still only averaged 2 or 3 eggs a day. Then one day we had four again! It was tiny but mighty.

My first time getting 5 eggs

To my surprise about a week later we had a day with FIVE eggs! Of course it’s only been a one time thing, but I’ve kept a close eye on the baby girls.

Today I figured out it’s Dixie who has started laying….still not sure if Bluebella has resumed laying or if it’s another little one. The fact that it’s 13 degrees today doesn’t help. I am very ready for Spring and the thought of more regular eggs….and not having to say, “Honey, don’t eat too many eggs I need to bake tomorrow.”

How animal lovers plow snow

Why plow the driveway when there are animals in need? First comes some paths in the dog run so the dogs can get around. Then it’s the chicken run. My shoveling wasn’t enough for this round of snow. The hubby was kind enough to make me some paths to the bird feeder and to the barn.

Where do I sit?

Kitty Storm has learned a few tricks from Ollie. When mommy is working, sitting behind her is so cozy….they haven’t learned they both don’t fit.

In like a Lion…

This winter has been quite a test to us and our new Homestead. I can’t wait to see what March will bring….I’m guessing flooding and mud! How fun!

At least we know it will lead to Spring…I am already dreaming of seed starting, permanent fencing, native plant sales and more eggs! I really do love this life and our crazy adventures outside Suburbia!

I need a bumper sticker that says, “Exurbs or Bust!”
