The baby chicks are coming soon!

Now that it’s Spring, it’s time to get down to business.  After a lot of research, we finally ordered the chicks!  We wanted to start small so we were not sure if we should mail order, buy at the store, etc.

I bought all the starter supplies at Tractor Supply Company, but they only sold chicks as “straight runs”.  This means they are not pre-sexed and we could end up with some roosters.  Not ready for that! In the end, we decided to order from Grayslake Feed Sales. Unlike a lot of the online sites who have large minimums, we were able to order any number we wanted.

We decided on six chicks for starters.  As soon as they have enough collective orders, someone from the store will drive and pick up the chicks.  Hopefully in the next week or two the chickies will arrive!

In preparation, I found this shirt for the hubby while at Target:

The first new additions will be 2 Black Australorps, 2 Buff Orpingtons, and 2 Americanas (Easter Eggers).  They are all supposed to be friendly and decent egg layers. Originally we were going to use an old metal dog crate as our brooder box.  Luckily the hubby has tons of scrap wood and made me plywood box.  The bottom will be lined with cardboard and then shavings.  Can’t find the photo so I will upload it later.
