With temperatures in the 90s, the Coop was hot

Time to let the chickens free range in the yard to get some more air.  Since this is my first time with chickens, I never know what to expect.  I have heard they love meal worms and sometimes red worms.  I thought that if I had a treat I knew they would come running for it might be easier to retrieve any strays.  Even though I had a tinge of guilt, I collected some worms from the worm bin to try with the girls.  Soup was the only one eager and the rest could care less.  Maybe worms are an acquired taste.

I was still a little nervous someone might go wild so I enlisted the whole family to help and keep guard.  One by one I picked up the chickens and put them on the ground beneath the coop.  The trouble child was Maude who kept running out of reach. She made the funniest squawks…a call to her missing friends I guess. Soon everyone was out in the yard and enjoying a snack.  We even tried filling up an old kiddie pool to cool off, but nobody was too interested.

Back to the Coop

The girls were great and never went far from the coop.  Behind the coop in the shade there was a nice breeze so I don’t blame them.  When it was time to send them home, I devised a plan to catch Maude first.  I figured if I left her for last I might be running in circles all night.

Only took about 2 minutes to catch Maude and into the coop she went.  She waited for her friends to all be loaded one by one and no one tried to escape.  I think next time I’ll be able to handle it with just the little kids helping.

Another night of rain!

We had a lot of rain over night and into the morning.  When the rain subsided enough to run outside, we found the girls nice and dry.  Good job caulking hubby!! Filled their food and water before the next round of storms hit.  If only our basement was as dry as their coop.

Butterflies

We have seen the most beautiful blue black and blue butterflies recently.  After a little research, I’ve learned they are called Red Spotted Purples.  They hang around our dog run and patio more than the butterfly garden.

I’ve been trying to photograph them all week and leave it to the hubby to get the most beautiful shot.

Next I need to get photos of the awesome dragonflies around the pond.  They are blue too and faster than the butterflies.
