Chicken Coop Design

We spent a lot of time trying to figure out the best design for building a chicken coop.  We finally settled on a free plan we found online from E Fleming on YouTube. With plans downloadable from Flickr, it seemed like an easy plan to follow.  Of course, the Hubby had to do some tweaks of his own and add some upcycled touches. (Upcycling is to reuse materials and turn it into something better).

The basic frame followed his design.

Coop moving outdoors

When it was time to move it from the barn to outside, the hubby had to cut a few inches off the bottom legs to make it fit outside the door.

Vinyl flooring inside the coop

One of my favorite features is the vinyl flooring on the bottom of the coop.  Makes clean up a breeze!

Upcycled cedar fence

The exterior features several upcycled components. The cedar siding courtesy of my parents…..just weeks after installing a new fence in their yard for my dogs, a storm knocked down a tree and took out an entire fence panel.  The hubby saved it knowing he would find a use one day…and here it is!  Also, the “sunroof” is decorated with cedar pickets that were “garbage picked” from my parent’s neighbors garbage.

Water spout outside the coup

Their water comes from a 5 gallon bucket with nipples so once they figured out it was water, there was no adjustment necessary.  Another great feature is the PVC pipe from the bucket to the outside so I can just add water without having to enter the coop!

Almost finished coopThe “almost” finished Coop!!!  I still haven’t finished staining all the trim.  Also working on a PVC feeder that hopefully will have outside access like the waterer.  The chickens are very happy and so am I.

Building a chicken coop took a lot longer than I expected, but well worth it.  Don’t tell the hubby, but now it’s time to research a duck coop for next year! 🙂
