Time flies…and so do chickens!

It’s hard to believe my little fluff balls are so big!  Truthfully, they are so much bigger than I expected.  I look at them in the morning and think, how much more can you grow??  The black Australorps win the award for the friendliest for sure.  The Buffs are second because they are sweet, just not as cuddly.  The Ameracaunas are beautiful, heavy, and a bit standoffish.  Maude runs every time I reach my hands in…unlike Zombie who jumps on me every chance she gets!  They have adult feathers and adult appetites!  They are ready for the real coop outdoors which should be done in a day or two.  To prepare, they had their first field trip outdoors in Ollie’s old dog kennel.  I am thinking of letting them free range in the dog area, but I’m afraid they will fly over the four foot fence.  These girls love to jump out of their house now.

One day old vs Six weeks old

Zombie - 6 weeks

My Zombie love…she is just the sweetest and most friendly chick.  All she wants to do is hang out with us.  She is getting harder to tell the difference from Ozzy except for the tip of her beak which is still black…and the fact she will climb on you if you let her.

Ozzy girl is number two on the sweetness list.  She will sometimes join her sister sitting on me.  She has less white around her face, but still has a whiter tip of the beak.

chickaletta

Chickaletta - six weeks

Chickaletta is the smallest of the group and her feathers are not as poofy as Bluebella.  She always seems to just be watching us but too shy to do much.

Bluebella with the beautiful tail feathers.  My daughter wishes she was still a day old chick and isn’t as fond of holding her.  Also was not happy when she tried to jump on her head today.  They are ready to fly the coop.

soup

Soup - six weeks

Soup.  One word: big.  It’s crazy how heavy she feels compared to all the other girls.  Her coloring is amazing and although she is not super friendly, she is always watching for her turn to get something.  Snack time….she is first in line and then runs to protect her treat.

Maude - six weeks

Maude.  The chickenist chicken of them all.  Anything comes near her and she runs.  Once I catch her she will sit next to me without a fuss, but she is fast.  And huge.  And gorgeous. I just hope she isn’t a rooster….there is just something about her….

Six week celebration!

In honor of six weeks, we made our first trip outdoors.  Once outdoors, it was pretty funny because they didn’t want to get off the tray.  I slowly pulled it out and they just crammed up the side of the kennel.  The kids got some treats…clovers from the grass and it worked to lure them to the other side.  They had a great time in the grass and easily moved back onto the tray when it was time to go.

The chicks outside for the first time Enjoying the day and not bothered by the sound of semi trucks on the road

Jealous Ollie checking out Zombie getting love

Zombie greeting

Poor jealous little Ollie in the window.  She comes in to see the girls in the brooder box, but if she walk up to them while they are in the kennel they all try to fly out.  Of course this photo wasn’t staged…Zombie just had to fly out to see what was happening.  She was the first one to fly up to see what we were doing today.

Hopefully by this weekend the girls will be in their new amazing house.  The hubby has been working so hard and it shows!!  I will have full details on the Coop build too.
