Eating our first eggs

Eating our first eggs

We finally ate some eggs!!  Of course they were delicious. We are still getting one a day and occasionally two…I wondered if our rooster, Soup, was part of the problem.

So long dear Mr. Soup

Day Old SoupOh Mr. Soup….I love you so much, but you are stressing everyone out!

Four lady friends are not enough for you and you are scaring the baby chicks….and now you are starting to scare the kids. He has never been the friendliest bird and time hasn’t changed that.  He is no Frog the Rooster!

We knew he needed to go if we were ever going to get the babies (who are not really babies at 9 weeks) to integrate with the older flock.  They run the other direction every time they are in the yard together.

Of course we didn’t want him to become someone’s Soup….

Sunday morning the hubby made plans to pick up something he bought online from a guy with a ton of pet animals….I told him to find out if he wanted another rooster…..and the answer was yes!

Chasing a Rooster in the Rain

Of course it was drizzling and as soon as I let Soup out it started to pour.  I thought I’d do my usual mealworm bag shake and he would come running, but no luck!  Next we tried to trap him in a smaller area, but the hubby answered a phone call and both times I cornered Soup he flew out before we could get him.

The clock was ticking, I was sliding in the mud and we finally had to resort to the hubby going into the coop and just grabbing him.  I admit I was scared he would bite me, but the hubby wouldn’t even put gloves on! Didn’t take long for him to grab him and put him in the kennel for the trip to his new home.

So long Soup

Yup, that’s Ollie’s trusty old kennel.  The barn kittens are still in the mudroom and lost their home…but they love being free full time in the mudroom.

It was bittersweet to see him go…but he really is going to a farm to live out his days without becoming dinner.

The hubby said he went straight from the kennel and into their new coop like it was nothing!

Then on to an Open House

After getting soaking wet and full of mud, it was time to shower and host an Open House!  As much as I want to focus on rural properties, this Open House was in a more affluent suburb.  I couldn’t help but think what would these people think if they had seen me just a few hours ago….but this is my life and I wouldn’t trade it!

Plus, I came home to this….I think Felix (the black/white one) is saying, “who needs a kennel when we can snuggle on Daddy’s sweatshirt he left behind!”
