Red Worms for Composting
It’s a good thing they can’t read (even though they love newspapers). I forgot to mention some more beloved residents….the composting worms!! In April of 2016, I bought my first pound of red worms for composting off of Craigslist. The hubby helped me make bins out of Rubbermaid tubs. The worms are fed all sorts of kitchen veggie and fruit scraps….the exceptions are no meat, cheese, citrus, onions, spicy peppers, and starchy foods. They did a great job, but we moved before I even got use the ultimate prize… the worm castings (poop) which is an amazing fertilizer.
While we were without a house, I had to limit the worm population. Now that we are home, I purchased some new red worms from Craigslist and added them to my collection. Not only will the worms eat my leftover kitchen scraps (which they will have to share with the chickens), they will be a tasty treat for the chickens and bait for the fish in the pond.
Some people suggest leaving the lid off and shining a light on the bin to keep the worms down in their new home. I have never had problems, but I do check on them a few times a day when they are new. There are some scary pictures out there of worms who try to escape en masse.

One day I will add some photos of the construction of the homemade worm bins. I have two different ones, both made out of Rubbermaid bins. They are very simple to make and a great use of all those peels and scraps.
